Arsenal bounced back from their loss to Liverpool as Martin Zubimendi struck twice in a commanding 3-0 victory over Nottingham Forest, spoiling Ange Postecoglou’s first outing as Forest manager.

Postecoglou, returning to the dugout for the first time since he was sacked by Tottenham 3 months ago, was always going to be in for a difficult day, coming up against a manager that he had failed to beat in every previous encounter. As BBC Sport reported, Arsenal quickly assumed control through Zubimendi’s thumping first-half volley, before Viktor Gyökeres and the Spaniard’s second-half header sealed the win.

The performance came at a crucial moment for Arsenal. Criticised for their limp display in defeat to Liverpool before the international break, Arteta’s men answered with attacking fluency, even as injuries forced adjustments. Captain Martin Ødegaard departed early with a shoulder concern, yet the Gunners’ replacements thrived. Noni Madueke, again deputising for the injured Bukayo Saka, tormented Forest’s defence, his relentless directness leading to the opener. Eberechi Eze, on his full debut, set up Gyökeres to double the lead.

For Forest, the evening brought both glimpses of promise and sobering reality. Postecoglou attempted to imprint his philosophy, pressing higher and playing with greater ambition than under Nuno Espírito Santo. But against an Arsenal side playing with verve and confidence, such intent left them vulnerable. Morgan Gibbs-White spurned their best chance on the counter, while injuries to key defenders compounded their difficulties.

Still, there were signs of Postecoglou’s character. Forest’s approach was more expansive, more daring, if not yet effective. The Australian, speaking post-match, praised his players’ commitment but acknowledged the work ahead. With limited preparation time and key fixtures looming, patience will be required.

Arsenal now turn to the Champions League, hosting Athletic Bilbao on Tuesday, while Forest face Swansea in the EFL Cup. For Arteta, this was a statement win; for Postecoglou, the start of a long project.
