After ending their seven-match winning streak with a draw against Tottenham Hotspur, the Arsenal u18s knew that they almost certainly needed to win both of their final two matches to win the u18 Premier League South this season.

The first of those two games was away to Fulham on Saturday, and the young Gunners got off to a terrible start.

Within 15 minutes, Fulham were 2-0 up, and despite Arsenal’s Jack Talbot saving a penalty in the 25th minute, Fulham made it three just moments afterwards. Less than half an hour into the match, the result already looked beyond the away side’s reach.

Max Dowman stepped up for the team, as he has so often in recent weeks. After one of his solo efforts was saved, Dowman converted a rebound from close range in the 44th minute.

Dan Casey then scored an impressive lobbed finish, assisted by Dowman, sending Arsenal in just 3-2 down at the half-time break. Dowman now has 12 goals and three assists in his last six appearances.

If the Gunners hoped to complete the comeback early in the second half, they would have been left disappointed as Fulham instead regained a two-goal advantage through Brodie Dair’s goal.

Casey finished off a counter-attack to complete his brace and make it 4-3, but Arsenal couldn’t find another goal or two to earn a point or three.

With Southampton’s u18s beating Leicester City later in the day, Arsenal are now incapable of finishing first in the league.

If Aston Villa lose their penultimate game, the Gunners could then secure a second-place finish by beating Villa on the final day. If Villa draw or win, Arsenal will be playing for third.
