  1. Date: Thursday, 2nd October.
  2. Kick-off: 5:45pm BST.
  3. Venue: Stadio Olimpico, Rome.

AS Roma team news

Roma will be without several key players for their European clash with Lille. Paulo Dybala remains sidelined with a hamstring injury that has proven more complicated than initially anticipated, with coach Gian Piero Gasperini confirming the Argentine won’t return until after the October international break. Leon Bailey is also unavailable, having yet to make a single appearance since his summer move from Aston Villa due to a persistent muscle injury.

The Giallorossi could hand opportunities to several players who have impressed in recent weeks. Matias Soule has been in excellent form, scoring crucial goals in Serie A, while Artem Dovbyk ended his goal drought with a strike against Hellas Verona last weekend. Mile Svilar is expected to continue in goal, with Gianluca Mancini and Evan Ndicka forming the defensive partnership.

Lille team news

Bruno Genesio’s side will miss some defensive stalwarts for their trip to Rome. Alexsandro is ruled out with a psoas injury sustained following his return from international duty with Brazil. Thomas Meunier is also unavailable after undergoing groin surgery and is expected to be sidelined for several weeks.

However, Lille can call upon veteran striker Olivier Giroud, who has made an immediate impact since returning to French football. The 38-year-old scored the winner in their Europa League opener against Brann, becoming the oldest substitute ever to score in the competition. Chancel Mbemba and Aissa Mandi are available for selection in defence.

Form

AS Roma

Gasperini’s side has shown impressive resilience since their setback against Torino. Roma secured a crucial 2-1 victory over Nice in their Europa League opener and followed it up with a convincing 2-0 win against Hellas Verona in Serie A. The Giallorossi have been particularly strong defensively, keeping clean sheets in four of their last six matches across all competitions. Their home record in European competition has been outstanding, winning 75 per cent of their Europa League games at the Stadio Olimpico.

Lille

Les Dogues have experienced mixed fortunes in recent weeks, showing flashes of brilliance alongside disappointing defeats. Their Europa League campaign began positively with a 2-1 home victory over Brann, though they required Giroud’s late intervention to secure the points. In Ligue 1, Lille suffered a setback with a 1-0 home defeat to Lyon, after a comprehensive 3-0 loss to Lens in the Derby du Nord. However, they showed character with a 2-1 victory over Toulouse earlier in September.

Predicted lineups

AS Roma: Svilar; Hermoso, Mancini, Ndicka; Rensch, Cristante, El Aynaoui, Tsimikas; Soule, El Shaarawy; Ferguson

Lille: Bodart; Santos, Ngoy, Mbemba, Verdonk; Bentaleb, Bouaddi; Fernandez-Pardo, Haraldsson, Sahraoui; Giroud
