Aston Villa manager Unai Emery says the club are working to find a “solution” for Harvey Elliott (22) after the on-loan Liverpool winger was left out of the squad for Thursday’s Europa League trip to Basel, as reported by Sky Sports.
Elliott has struggled for minutes since arriving on Deadline Day, making only five appearances in all competitions. Villa are believed to be obligated to buy him for £35m if he reaches 10 games, a clause that has added complication to an already difficult situation.
Emery confirmed the midfielder has remained in Birmingham as discussions continue.
“We are speaking with him about his situation. He is not here with us,” Emery said. “I respect him as a player and as a person. He is training well, but we have one circumstance with him. Hopefully, we can get the best for him and the best for us.”
Elliott has not featured in Villa’s last seven Premier League squads, with his most recent appearance coming in early October during the club’s 2-0 win at Feyenoord in the Europa League.
Emery insists communication with the player has been constant as they try to determine the next step.
“I have spoken with him two or three times,” he added. “He is on loan, but he is not definitely adding to us with a permanent contract.”
