Aston Villa travel to the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday night to face Arsenal for the second time in four weeks.

Villa come into the contest on the back of a dramatic 2-1 victory over Chelsea, extending an extraordinary winning run that has transformed their season.

Having already beaten the Gunners earlier this month thanks to a stoppage-time winner at Villa Park, confidence will be sky-high for Unai Emery’s side.

Arsenal are top of the table, but Villa’s recent form suggests this could be another uncomfortable night for them.

Match preview

Villa have won eight consecutive Premier League matches and 11 in all competitions.

That run represents Villa’s best top-flight streak in over a century and underlines the scale of their resurgence after sitting 18th and winless five games into the campaign.

Emery’s side has developed a habit of rescuing games late, salvaging 18 points from losing positions this season, more than any other Premier League team.

Arsenal’s home form is formidable, but the Villans have taken four points from their last two league visits to the Emirates.

With just three points separating the sides, another positive result would draw the Villans level with their hosts and further intensify the title race.

Match stats

Villa have won their last eight Premier League matches, their longest top-flight winning run since 1910.

The Birmingham-based club are on an 11-game winning streak, equalling an all-time club record set in 1897 and 1914.

They have collected more points (36) and more wins (12) than any other Premier League team since matchday six.

The Villains are unbeaten in their last two away league matches against Arsenal and have won three of the previous five Premier League meetings overall.

Villa talisman Ollie Watkins has scored four goals in five Premier League appearances at the Emirates.

Team news

Villa head into the midweek clash with a relatively settled squad, although Emery must contend with two enforced changes.

Matty Cash and Boubacar Kamara are both suspended after picking up bookings against Chelsea, opening the door for Amadou Onana to return in midfield.

The ‘fantastic‘ Lamare Bogarde is expected to deputise at right-back, while Ezri Konsa and Victor Lindelof should continue their partnership in central defence.

Tyrone Mings and Pau Torres remain sidelined, while Ross Barkley is also unavailable. Ivory Coast forward Evann Guessand is away at the Africa Cup of Nations.

Watkins is expected to return to the starting XI here after his performance against Chelsea.

The England striker (20 caps) has a strong record against Arsenal and should lead the line, supported by Emiliano Buendia, Morgan Rogers and John McGinn.

Youri Tielemans offers control and creativity from deeper areas of the pitch.
