A £30 million offer feels ambitious, though it probably won’t change Barcelona’s thinking. Villa need fresh quality after Youri Tielemans’ departure, yet Bernal represents potential more than an instant replacement. He returned superbly from an ACL injury and produced five goals plus one assist in 33 appearances, although adapting to the relentless pace and physical demands of Premier League football remains another challenge altogether.

Barcelona strengthened their position long before interest gathered speed. Bernal signed a contract running until June 2029, and that agreement includes a staggering €500 million release clause. Flick already sees him as the natural holding midfielder capable of leading the side for years, especially with Frenkie de Jong struggling through injury setbacks. Selling academy graduates of this calibre simply doesn’t match Barcelona’s sporting plans.

Aston Villa deserve praise for identifying Bernal before his value climbs even higher. Even so, this feels like an attempt with very slim odds of success. Barcelona have repeatedly labelled him untouchable; his contract gives them complete control, and his importance has grown after last season’s title-winning campaign. Unless Villa produce an offer far beyond £30 million, Barcelona are far more likely to sell fringe players than allow one of La Masia’s brightest midfield prospects to walk away.
