Aston Villa will be aiming to get their UEFA Europa League campaign back on track when they host a struggling Maccabi Tel Aviv at Villa Park on Thursday.
Unai Emery’s side are looking to bounce back from a 2-0 Premier League defeat at Liverpool and a surprise 2-1 loss to Go Ahead Eagles on matchday three. Maccabi Tel Aviv, in contrast, are winless in the Europa League and sit 32nd in the 36-team table, though they remain unbeaten at the top of their domestic league. This match will be played without away supporters, following a decision by the local Safety Advisory Group.
Unai Emery is contending with several injuries ahead of this match. Unfortunately, key defender Tyrone Mings is sidelined with a hamstring injury. He joins Emiliano Buendía and Youri Tielemans in the treatment room. In addition, midfielder Ross Barkley is ineligible for the European squad. However, the manager is boosted by the return of Harvey Elliott. Elliott is available again after he was ineligible to face his parent club, Liverpool, at the weekend.
Maccabi Tel Aviv manager Žarko Lazetić reports no new significant injury problems ahead of the trip to Birmingham. Therefore, the Israeli side will rely on their captain and top scorer, Dor Peretz, to lead the attack. Meanwhile, midfielders Kristijan Belic and Issouf Sissokho are expected to anchor the midfield.
Villa’s strong recent form was halted by consecutive defeats to Go Ahead Eagles and Liverpool. Prior to this, they had won five of their previous six matches. In the Europa League, Unai Emery’s side sits 10th in the table with six points (W2, L1). Furthermore, their home form at Villa Park remains formidable. In fact, they have lost only one of their last 27 matches there in all competitions.
The Israeli champions have found the Europa League difficult this season. For instance, they are winless in their opening three games (D1, L2). They have also scored just one goal so far. In contrast, their domestic form has been perfect. They remain unbeaten and sit top of the Israeli Premier League, having won their last three league matches.
Aston Villa predicted XI: Martinez; Cash, Lindelof, Torres, Maatsen; Onana, Bogarde; Sancho, Elliott, Malen; Watkins
Maccabi Tel Aviv predicted XI: Mishpati; Asante, Shlomo, Camara, Revivo; Belic, Sissokho; Davida, Andrade, Varela; Peretz
