Athletic Club Museoa has opened its first temporary exhibition, Hitza (la promesa), adding a new space to the San Mamés tour and spotlighting the 1955-56 double winners.

As reported by as.com, the show revisits the side that won Liga and Copa in 1956, later remembered as the 11 aldeanos for defeating Real Madrid in the 1958 Copa final.

Museum director Asier Arrate said the 1958 feat often overshadowed a league won ahead of Di Stefano’s Real Madrid and Kubala’s Barcelona, which he ranked among their greatest.

That cup run began two years earlier, when coach Ferdinand Daucik told 1956 celebrants the glory was not over and pledged another trophy. He partly kept his word but was dismissed before the final.

President Enrique Guzmán cited a friendly against Burnley, in which Daucik used goalkeeper Carmelo up front, to dismiss him amid Bilbao press criticism. Baltasar Albéniz replaced him for the famous Copa final at the Santiago Bernabéu.

The exhibition focuses on that first year of 1950s glory. Board member Jon Ruigómez, who oversees the museum, said an institution’s significance lies in its memory, archives, collection and testimonies, and that Athletic are unique.

President Jon Uriarte expressed hope that the values of that era can guide the present. He spoke of ambition, of a different and unique Athletic that does not fear challenges and still aims as high as possible.
