Nico Serrano showcased his credentials as Athletic’s sharpest outlet, and Williams clinched a 1-2 cup win in stoppage time.
as.com’s ratings noted two centres for Izeta, a fierce effort parried and more strikes just wide, with Serrano the liveliest.
Padilla saved from Rioja but spilled for Sadiq’s goal. Navarro’s cross then forced Sadiq into an own goal before Williams decided it with a ruthless finish.
Gorosabel started, Danjuma stretched him yet he stuck at it and nicked the ball from Duro when through. Monreal was the sixth academy debutant, Sadiq beat him with a header.
Laporte returned after two months, held his position and went off on the hour. Lekue struggled early against Rioja but improved. Vesga started in the cup, grafting against Valencia.
Jauregizar, the only starter retained, mixed passing and intensity, headed wide and had a penalty saved by Dimitreski. Selton’s first cup start brought flashes and a tangle with Foulquier in a checked incident, but his passing was erratic. Izeta was busy and tried a bicycle kick.
Navarro crossed for the Sadiq own goal, then shot wide from Jauregizar’s centre. Berchiche replaced Laporte on 58, reliable. Galarreta came on for Vesga on 58 to steady midfield.
Guruzeta replaced Izeta on 58, saw a finish blocked by Tarrega’s arm, checked by VAR for a right-elbow handball, then his movement dragged defenders for the winner. Williams came on for Navarro on 69 and buried the stoppage-time clincher for 1-2.
