Atlético Madrid are already planning for next season’s transfer window, with strengthening the midfield seen as one of the club’s main priorities and their latest target is Wolves' midfielder João Gomes.

According to journalist Ben Jacobs, Atlético have made progress in talks with Wolves through intermediaries and are now close to agreeing a deal worth around £38 million (€45m).

Wolves’ relegation to the Championship has already been confirmed, meaning the club are expected to sell several key players in order to offset the financial impact of dropping out of the Premier League.

Developed at Flamengo, João Gomes Gomes joined Wolves during the 2022/23 season and quickly established himself as a key figure at Molineux. Since arriving in England, the midfielder has made 128 appearances for the club, scoring eight goals and providing six assists.

The Brazilian was also linked with a move to Manchester United during the previous transfer window, although a deal never materialised.

Atlético now appear to be leading the race for the 25-year-old as Diego Simeone looks to strengthen his squad ahead of next season.
