FC Barcelona played a game for the ages against Atletico Madrid last night, which ended in a 4-4 draw. Still, one must say that this is a game that the Catalan side should have won far more comfortably if they had taken their chances and been more solid at the back.

It was one of those games in which there were a lot of positives to take back but at the same time, a lot of things to work on. As much as the attack has been firing on all cylinders so far this season, Barcelona can do with being more tight defensively.

Now, as per MARCA, Barcelona’s mistakes against Atletico Madrid have shown Hansi Flick a number of cracks that have been haunting the team for quite some time now and some patterns that the German coach would want to address.

Conceding early goals minutes into the game has happened to Barcelona before, in Lisbon against Benfica. Similarly, last night, the team allowed Atletico Madrid to have two shots on target within the first minutes, of which one ended in a goal. They conceded the second soon after.

Similarly, conceding late goals and being unable to see out games from winning positions has been another issue. This happened early on against Celta Vigo in the league after a red card, squandering a 2-0 lead to finish the game 2-2.

It then happened against Atletico Madrid in the league where Alexander Sorloth scored an injury-time winner to take all three points at the Montjuic. Against Atalanta in the Champions League, Barcelona squandered the lead twice and the chance to finish top of the table (although now they would be counting their stars that they didn’t).

One thing that Hansi Flick can potentially look into is dropping the backline a little bit when he tries to see out games. It is understandable that the German doesn’t want to give up on his principles, but sometimes, sanity has to prevail.
