Atletico Madrid are interested in signing Joao Gomes from Wolves as the club consider replacements for Conor Gallagher.

Gallagher joined Tottenham Hotspur in a €40m deal on Wednesday, having struggled for regular first-team football under Diego Simeone this season.

The England international has returned to the Premier League after starting just four La Liga games over the opening months of the campaign.

Atletico are now eyeing Gomes as a potential replacement, report Marca. The Spanish side hope Wolves’ precarious situation in the Premier League can aid their pursuit of Gomes.

Wolves are rooted to the bottom of the Premier League and are 14 points from safety, with relegation from the top tier probable barring a miraculous turnaround.

Despite that situation, Wolves are ready to retain Gomes until the end of the campaign unless offers arrive in excess of £40m.

The 24-year-old ranks sixth in the Premier League for tackles won and is viewed as an ideal option to replace Gallagher’s tenacious work in the Rojiblancos midfield.
