Barcelona’s pursuit of Julian Alvarez has encountered another significant obstacle, with Atletico Madrid prepared to negotiate with Arsenal while remaining unwilling to strengthen one of their biggest domestic rivals. 

According to journalist Graeme Bailey, the Spanish club has made their position clear to the striker’s representatives, even as Barcelona continue to view the Argentina international as their leading attacking target this summer.

The update comes at a time when Arsenal’s interest in Julian Alvarez is gathering momentum. 

The Premier League champions are actively exploring attacking reinforcements and believe they have a realistic opportunity if Barcelona are ultimately unable to complete a deal.

Despite that growing competition, it is crucial to note that those close to the player insist his preferred destination has not changed.

The race for the 26-year-old Argentine forward has become increasingly competitive over the course of the transfer window.

It is said that both Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain have maintained regular contact with Alvarez’s camp, ensuring they remain informed about any developments surrounding his future. 

However, every conversation has delivered the same message that the forward still wants to wear the Barcelona shirt.

That preference continues to influence the Julian Alvarez transfer, even though Barcelona are still working to create the financial conditions needed to pursue a deal.

While Barcelona remain the player’s priority, Arsenal have not backed away, with their Sporting director Andrea Berta understood to have spoken directly with Alvarez.

Now, the report suggests the Argentine would consider Arsenal only if a move to Barcelona becomes impossible. 

That possibility is enough to keep the Gunners involved, particularly because reaching an agreement with Atletico Madrid is not expected to present the same difficulties.

Simply put, from Atletico’s perspective, selling one of their biggest stars abroad is far more appealing than allowing him to strengthen a direct La Liga title rival.
