Atletico Madrid have been linked with Joao Gomes, who is widely expected to leave Wolves this summer following relegation. Wolves are understood to be seeking about £40 million for the midfielder.

According to RTI Esporte, Atletico now plan to prioritise Gomes after negotiations for Atalanta midfielder Ederson collapsed.

The Brazilian joined Wolves in January 2023 and has impressed with his tenacious performances in midfield. He is viewed as a strong fit for Diego Simeone’s intense and competitive approach.

The price tag is said to be set at £40 million, which would represent about £25 million profit for Wolves. It had previously been claimed that the club wanted to start talks at £60 million.

Interest in Gomes has been frequent during Wolves’ struggles, with Manchester United and Crystal Palace among the clubs linked. If he does head to Madrid, he could work under Simeone, who is under contract until 2027.
