Barcelona’s defence of the Copa del Rey came to an end despite a rousing 3-0 win over Atlético de Madrid, as the damage from the first leg ultimately proved too great to repair.

Thrashed 4-0 in the capital, Barça needed a near-miracle at Camp Nou. For a while, it felt possible. Marc Bernal struck twice and Raphinha converted from the penalty spot to give the hosts genuine hope, but a decisive fourth goal never arrived.

Hansi Flick’s side started with urgency, pressing high and forcing Atlético onto the back foot. The breakthrough came midway through the first half when Lamine Yamal created space out wide and delivered for Bernal to finish from close range.

On the stroke of half-time, Pedri was brought down in the area and Raphinha calmly dispatched the penalty to reduce the aggregate deficit further.

The hosts continued to push after the interval and Bernal’s second, turned in from João Cancelo’s cross with just under 20 minutes left, set up a tense finale.

Despite sustained pressure in the closing stages, Atlético stood firm to advance 4-3 on aggregate. Diego Simeone’s men march into the final, while Barcelona’s hopes of lifting the trophy again were brought to a frustrating halt.
