Liverpool’s next challenge was a major talking point on the latest Media Matters podcast from Anfield Index, as Dave Davis and Lewis Steele previewed the Reds’ upcoming derby clash with Everton.
The fixture carries extra significance as it will be the first Merseyside derby at Hill Dickinson Stadium, adding another layer of intensity to a match already loaded with pressure for Liverpool.
Steele made clear that Liverpool are not arriving as clear favourites. “You probably could,” he said when asked whether Everton could be favourites for the game.
That reflects Everton’s strong recent form under David Moyes. Steele praised their progress, saying, “Moysey has taken them from one point above relegation when he took over to a good shot of European football.”
He also highlighted the quality within Everton’s squad, referencing players capable of hurting Liverpool and describing them as “actually quite a good unit.”
For Liverpool, this is far from an ideal moment to travel across Stanley Park.
The sense of occasion was another major theme. Steele expects the new stadium to create a daunting environment for the visitors.
“This is their biggest game of the season,” he said, before adding, “The atmosphere will be rocking.”
A first derby at Hill Dickinson Stadium guarantees noise, emotion and intensity. Everton supporters will view it as a landmark occasion, while Liverpool must handle the pressure of entering a new hostile setting with confidence already fragile.
Steele also pointed out a scheduling advantage for Everton, noting they had a full week to prepare, while Liverpool had only a short recovery period after their European defeat.

Attention then turned to Arne Slot and how he can respond. Injuries and squad fatigue have narrowed his options significantly.
“There’s not much,” Steele admitted when discussing possible changes.
He suggested Liverpool may need to rely on familiar attacking names again, while also calling for a midfield setup similar to the side that beat Fulham. Yet even with the right choices, the challenge remains substantial.
Slot must also ensure his decisions are sharper than in recent weeks. As Steele put it plainly, “Slot just has to get his decisions right.”
Given Liverpool’s recent struggles, Steele suggested a draw may not be disastrous. “I think he would,” he said when asked whether Slot would take a point.
He added, “A point wouldn’t be the end of the world for Liverpool.”
That may feel like a modest target for a club of Liverpool’s stature, but current form, injuries and Everton’s momentum have changed the context.
The first derby at Hill Dickinson Stadium now looks like a stern examination of Liverpool’s resilience, and perhaps another defining moment in Arne Slot’s season.
