Augsburg will head into Sunday’s fixture in 13th place after winning four, drawing four and losing seven of their 15 league matches. Jess Thorup’s side experienced an underwhelming end to 2024, winning just one of their final seven league games of the calendar year. The Fuggerstädter played out consecutive draws and lost to Bayern Munich, before they returned to winning ways with a 1-0 victory against Bochum at the end of November.
That result proved to be Augsburg’s final win of 2024, as they went on to draw 2-2 against Eintracht Frankfurt they lost back-to-back matches against Bayer Leverkusen and Holstein Kiel, They would have been particularly disappointed to suffer a heavy 5-1 loss in their away meeting with newly-promoted Kiel, extending their winless away run to 11 league matches.
Having gone nearly 10 months without a Bundesliga away win, Augsburg will be pleased to have home advantage for their first outing of 2025. The hosts will take confidence from the fact they have won three of their last five home matches in the top flight.
The hosts are unable to call upon Mads Pedersen, Keven Schlotterbeck, Reece Oxford, Masaya Okugawa and Yusuf Kabadayi.
Stuttgart are currently sitting in 11th place after winning six, drawing five and losing four of their 15 league matches. Die Schwaben experienced an encouraging run of form before the winter break, winning three of their final five league games of 2024 (D1, L1). They kicked off their period of results with a win against Bochum and a draw with Werder Bremen, before they recorded back-to-back league victories over Union Berlin and Heidenheim.
Unfortunately for die Schwaben, their unbeaten run was brought to an end by a narrow 1-0 home defeat against newly-promoted St. Pauli. After finishing last year with a home fixture, Stuttgart will head on their travels for their first match of 2025, with the visitors looking to claim consecutive Bundesliga away victories for the first time since March/April 2024. They may fancy their chances of claiming all three points, having won four of their previous five meetings with Augsburg.
Sebastian Hoeneß’s side are without the injured quartet of Dan-Axel Zagadou, Justin Diehl, Luca Raimund and El Bilal Touré.
