When Austin FC signed USMNT forward Brandon Vazquez, they didn't hold their horses. With a $10 million price tag on it and filled with strategic overtones, this could just be the move that might turn the club around. Let's break down what's behind this record-breaking transfer and why it's so pivotal for soccer in the MLS.
He will be on a solid deal through 2028, with an option to extend to 2029. He not only represents the most expensive signing in Austin FC's history but he is also symbolic of the growth in ambition from the club. He takes one of the spots for the Designated Players.
The financial maneuvering, via a deal with the San Jose Earthquakes that allowed Austin to circumvent MLS waiver order, only further illustrates how Austin FC isn't playing it cautious. The fact that $100,000 of GAM is split across this season and next only serves as a reminder just how convoluted MLS rules can get. At the end of it all, the only thing that matters, though, is what happens between the lines.
If you’re not already familiar with Brandon Vazquez, here’s a quick rundown. From being a backup at Atlanta United to becoming a star at FC Cincinnati, Vazquez has racked up an impressive 43 goals, earning a spot in the MLS Best XI in 2022. In Liga MX with Monterrey, he added 14 goals in 49 matches.
During this last season, Austin FC really struggled in front of goal, scoring just 39 times, with that being ranked as the third-worst total in the league. This then meant that with Gyasi Zardes having left the team, his shoes needed replacing rather badly. With the creative engine in Sebastián Driussi already hearing the call to return to River Plate, that adds more emphasis to this attacking group.
Vazquez brings just what Austin FC have been craving: consistency up front. Having experience in both MLS and Liga MX, besides being able to handle the pressure, he is the perfect fit to lead the offensive line.
The new chapter that is being written by Austin FC is unmistakable, with Nico Estévez at the helm. In addition to Vazquez, other key signings in Osman Bukari have sent a message to the fans and the league that the intent is to opt for a much sharper and dynamic style.
The potential symbiosis between players like Driussi-if he is retained-and Bukari is something supporters should be highly eager to look out for.
Of course, every signing carries some sort of risk. Vazquez did well at Monterrey, but his time in Liga MX was not exactly a headliner. The pressure to justify this sizeable investment will be extreme, especially given the recent history of Austin FC, who finished 10th in the Western Conference and missed the playoffs.
One thing is for sure: this transfer is a turning point for Austin FC. With such an investment and further restructuring, the club is all in on a brighter future. And if Vazquez turns out to be the real deal, there's no doubt he will go down in history as the player who redefined Austin FC's legacy.
