Australia have qualified for the last six World Cups but have never gone beyond the last 16. They face Egypt in the round of 32 on Friday at 20:00, hoping to push past that ceiling.
According to L'Équipe, a FIFA-approved shift from Oceania to Asia in 2006 was designed to maximise their chances of reaching the finals. After repeated failures through intercontinental tournaments and play-offs in 1986, 1990, 1994, 1998 and 2002, the AFC route offered a simpler path and more slots.
In 2005, coach Frank Farina said the change would be transformative, bringing up to 16 qualifying matches to engage supporters. He framed it as a turning point that would put Australia on an equal footing.
The Socceroos then faced tougher Korean, Japanese and Saudi opposition. They moved on from an era of heavy wins over smaller Oceania sides, including 22-0 against Tonga in 2001, when only New Zealand regularly tested them. With Tim Cahill, their record scorer with 50 goals in 108 caps, they climbed from 48th in December 2025 to 27th before this World Cup.
They are the AFC’s last team standing in the round of 32, yet the last 16 remains their high-water mark, after 1-0 and 1-2 defeats by Italy in 2006 and Argentina in 2022. Head coach Tony Popovic, an ex-international defender with 58 caps and in post since 2024, says his youthful side want to produce something special. First comes the last-32 assignment, then probably a shot at the holders Argentina.
