Back to Midfield? Laimer Talks About His Role at Bayern | OneFootball

Konrad Laimer is one of the most versatile players on FC Bayern’s roster. However, now that he has permanently shifted to the fullback position, the Austrian could once again be called upon to play in midfield in the future. The 29-year-old has now spoken out about his role under Vincent Kompany.

Over the past two seasons, Konrad Laimer has been deployed more and more frequently as a fullback at FC Bayern. The Austrian international has been particularly impressive on the right side with consistently strong performances. Most recently, he has also filled in on the left side of defense on several occasions.

However, with the departure of Leon Goretzka and the signing of Nathaniel Brown, the personnel situation in the Bayern squad could change once again. That’s why, during the team’s Asian tour in Jeju, Laimer was asked whether a return to central midfield was also a possibility for him.

Laimer: “I don’t care where I play.”

The 29-year-old didn’t want to commit to a specific position and emphasized his flexibility: “There are probably only two positions left now where I’ll play here and where I feel very comfortable—or maybe just one; I have no idea. Maybe there’ll be four or five again in two months’ time. That’s why I don’t want to say anything about it.”

Laimer made it clear that he feels comfortable in several positions: “Ultimately, I feel comfortable in many positions. Over the past two years, I’ve often played right back, and last season I played left back a bit more as well. I feel comfortable in both positions, and I think my playing style allows me to contribute a lot to the team.”



If Vincent Kompany were to play him in midfield again in the future, Laimer wouldn’t have a problem with that either: “And if I end up playing somewhere else again, that wouldn’t be a problem either. I believe you can always get better at soccer. I want to get better and can’t wait for the season to start. I don’t care where I end up playing. The main thing is that I’m somewhere on the field and can play soccer.”

When asked about the changes in the squad’s lineup, Laimer pointed to his coach: “You’d have to ask the coach about that, because ultimately he’s the one who decides who plays where.”

The Austrian added: “I believe I have the versatility to play in several positions. Whether on the right, the left, or in the middle—I’ve even played further up front before. That’s why I’m totally relaxed about it, as long as I feel I can help the team with my skills.”
