Alejandro Balde delivered an outstanding performance in the second leg of the Champions League round of 16, playing a crucial role in Barcelona’s attacking display.

His influence on the game was evident, as he contributed significantly to the team’s fluid movement down the flank.

Reflecting on his form after the match, Balde acknowledged that he might be experiencing his best period as a player, highlighting this particular game as his strongest showing so far this season.

“I may be going through my best moment and today was my best game,” he said.

The young full-back also spoke about Barcelona’s progress in the Champions League, expressing confidence in the team’s potential. He emphasised that the club has firmly re-established itself as a competitive force in European football.

“We are a reality in Europe. I hope Barça can win all the titles. We are alive in all the competitions and our season is incredible.”

During the post-match discussions, Balde was asked which of his teammates—Pedri, Lamine Yamal, or Raphinha—would be the most deserving of the Ballon d’Or, given their standout displays against Benfica.

Without singling out a specific name, he simply expressed his hope that a Barcelona player would win the prestigious award.

“Give it to whoever, but let it be a Barça player,” he added.

Gavi’s verdict

Meanwhile, Gavi made his return to action against Benfica after missing two matches due to illness. The midfielder was introduced in the second half, replacing Dani Olmo, and played a vital role in maintaining control of the game.

Celebrating the team’s advancement to the quarter-finals, Gavi expressed confidence in Barcelona’s ability to win every possible trophy.

“Of course, we are convinced of winning everything. I am sure that we can take all the titles that are at stake because we are proving it,” he began saying.

Praise for Pedri

Gavi also took a moment to praise Pedri, who was named the match’s Most Valuable Player.

He highlighted Pedri’s exceptional talent, describing him as one of the finest midfielders in world football. According to Gavi, Pedri’s ability was never in doubt, but injuries had prevented him from showcasing his full potential last season.

“Pedri is top-notch. Everyone knows what kind of player he is, and I’m very happy for him because he couldn’t show it last year due to injuries. I can say that right now Pedri is the best midfielder in the world.”

On Yamal’s assist

One of the intriguing moments in the game was Raphinha’s opening goal, which came after an assist from Lamine Yamal. There was some debate about whether Lamine had intentionally provided the assist or had attempted a shot on goal.

Gavi clarified the situation, admitting that Lamine’s effort was a shot rather than a pass, but it did not matter since Raphinha capitalised on the opportunity and found the back of the net.

“The first goal? It was a shot but Raphinha caught it – laughed Gavi – The important thing is that it was a goal.”

On Barcelona future

Despite not being a regular starter this season, Gavi reaffirmed his commitment to Barcelona. Dismissing speculation about his future, he made it clear that he has no intention of leaving the club, emphasising his deep connection with Barcelona.

“It’s the club of my life and I will be here as long as I can. In the end, we rotate a lot and I feel like I’m participating.”

Additionally, Gavi addressed rumours suggesting that he was unhappy with his lack of starts and was considering an exit. He firmly denied such reports, reiterating that he has signed a long-term contract with the club and remains fully dedicated to Barcelona’s success.

“It’s all a lie. I have signed for five years. Barça is the club of my life and I will be here as long as I can. Not everything that is said is true,” he noted.
