Fierce competition for the 2025 Ballon d'Or (F)
Aitana Bonmatí/@France 24
Double holder of the trophy, Aitana Bonmatí is in the running for a third consecutive Ballon d'Or. The Spaniard is among the 30 nominees, as is her compatriot Alexia Putellas. The name of the winner will be announced on September 22.
The two players are the only ones to have won the trophy twice, and should either of them prevail, she will forever be crowned the queen of women's football. Indeed, no player has ever achieved the treble.
The two FC Barcelona stars must watch out for fierce competition from other contenders for the ultimate prize, such as England's European champions Hannah Hampton, Lucy Bronze, Alessia Russo, and Chloe Kelly. The battle for the trophy recognizing the world's best player of the year promises to be intense.
