Bamba Dieng, Ligue 1’s leading scorer in 2026, struck again against former club Marseille in Lorient’s 2-0 win on Saturday, a timely resurgence with the World Cup running from 11 June to 19 July.

Last Sunday he left Groupama Stadium in the 80th minute without scoring, a rarity this year after Dominik Greif’s superb save from a Panos Katseris pass and a left‑foot effort that drifted wide kept him on eight. He quickly answered by scoring against OM. According to L'Équipe, he is out of contract this summer and will not be short of suitors.

His previous high came in 2021-2022 with seven in 25 for Marseille after arriving from Diambars at 20. In January, Nasser Larguet said players can turn things around inside one or two months, a view since borne out.

Invited to leave last summer and limited to barely an hour of Ligue 1 football until January, he has since logged 848 minutes, a little over nine full matches, scoring five in his last seven. The transformation has been clear.

Coach Olivier Pantaloni said lingering physical issues have eased, that Dieng worked through the first half of the season and was reintroduced patiently, with improved training levels and a sharper mindset. He added the forward now sprints and runs in behind, and he hopes the upturn continues.

Pantaloni noted Dieng troubles defences and, if injuries spare him, he could resemble the Bamba of a few years ago. He felt there were extra goals left out there against OL, 0-2 last Sunday, and Paris FC, 1-1 on five April. Dieng tops the calendar-year chart ahead of Ousmane Dembélé on eight, with Estéban Lepaul, Joaquin Panichelli and Folarin Balogun on seven, and he has returned to Senegal after two years out, now on 21 caps and two goals. Lorient sit ninth.
