Flamengo have completed the biggest transfer in Brazilian football history to re-sign Lucas Paquetá from West Ham. According to Coluna Do Fla, club president Luiz Eduardo Baptista says the agreement includes a clause that would see the English side compensated if the midfielder is sold back to Europe.
Flamengo will pay 42 million euros, roughly R$260 million, on a five-year contract. The club paid 15.25 million euros up front, about R$94.545 million, with a further 26.75 million euros due in four instalments through 2028, around R$165.84 million.
Baptista called the request legitimate, saying West Ham would lose out if Paquetá returned for only a year then was sold for 70 million euros. He added Flamengo would consider any 100 million euro offer, but only if the player agreed to leave.
He stressed Flamengo do not intend to move Paquetá on. Many details were thrashed out and, in his view, the transfer would not have happened without the player’s desire to come back to Brazil. He credited West Ham for agreeing to the sale.
With Paquetá available, Flamengo visit Vitória on Tuesday 10 in the Campeonato Brasileiro’s third round. Kick-off is at 21:30 Brasília time at Barradão in Salvador.
