FC Barcelona continued showcasing their strong form as they once again emerged victorious in the Copa del Rey Round of 16 tie against Real Betis last night. The Catalans scored 5 goals past their opponents last night, thus building up on their 5-2 victory over Real Madrid a few days ago.
As was the case in the Spanish Super Cup final, this match against the Verdiblancos was another special match for the Blaugrana midfielder Gavi. This was not only because of the goal he scored on the night, but also because of his past association with the Seville club, which he left in 2015 to join the Barcelona youth academy.
In fact, he also apologized to the Real Betis fans for his goal that resulted in their club’s elimination from Copa del Rey. After this apology and celebrations with his teammates, he also talked to the media.
As Mundo Deportivo has reported, the Spanish midfielder was quite pleased with the result and with his contributions in this match:
“I’m very satisfied. The match went well, just as we needed it to. I’m very happy to contribute goals to the team. It’s a pleasure to help.”
Gavi was especially satisfied with how Barcelona reacted after suffering some defeats at the end of the last year:
“This is what we have to do in every match. Those defeats weren’t deserved. In the end, that’s football, and today we’ve shown we’re still here, just like we proved in the Supercopa.”
The La Masia graduate also highlighted his team’s aspirations for this season:
“Barça fans can keep dreaming. We want to keep performing like this every match and win as many titles as possible.”
Gavi was very clear that Ronald Araujo wants to stay at Barcelona, despite the speculation surrounding him in the media:
“Many journalists make up stories. Araújo wants to stay, and I’m confident he will.”
Lastly, the Spaniard showed his readiness to play in any position that Flick deems appropriate for him and the team:
“I’ll play wherever the coach tells me, wherever it’s best for the team.”
It was definitely delightful seeing Gavi getting back on the scoresheet after such a hard time when he had to endure a serious knee injury, spending 11 months on the sidelines. But he has been getting back to his best level gradually, and the matches against Real Madrid and Real Betis were sure indications of his progress.
