Barcelona boss Hansi Flick has placed lofty expectations on Manchester United star Marcus Rashford, with talisman Lamine Yamal currently sidelined.

Rashford getting up to speed at Barcelona

Rashford completed a season-long loan move to Barcelona during the summer transfer window after it became clear that he no longer had a future at United.

The forward fell out with Ruben Amorim last season, which forced him to spend the latter half of the 2024/25 campaign out on loan at Aston Villa. Despite enjoying an uptick in form at Villa, the Birmingham outfit opted against making his stay a permanent one.

United made Rashford available for transfer and there was no shortage of interest in him. However, the Carrington academy graduate consistently maintained that Barcelona was his dream club.

He eventually got his wish and registered his first goal contrirbution for the club last weekend – an assist for Raphinha in their dominant 6-0 victory over Valencia.

Barcelona’s attention is now on their crucial Champions League fixture against Newcastle on Thursday but they will be without their most important player, Lamine Yamal, who has been ruled out of action with a groin injury.

However, Flick is convinced that Rashford can come up with the goods in the Spaniard’s absence.

Flick backs Rashford

Flick said [as quoted by France24], “I have really followed Marcus since he started at Manchester and I always said ‘Wow! What kind of player he is, he is unbelievable.”

“He has speed but also in a one-against-one situation, he’s really fantastic and also his finishing, it’s unbelievable.”

The German coach continued, “What I saw in the first weeks here, it’s really good and I think he also has some more potential he can show us and of course he wants to do this.”

“For me, it’s great to have in in my team.”

Flick insisted that Barcelona’s aim is to go all the way and win the Champions League.
