Barcelona boss Hansi Flick has set a new lofty challenge for Manchester United loanee Marcus Rashford as his rich vein of form continues.
Rashford has looked like a player reborn since ditching United for Barcelona during the summer transfer window.
Signed on an initial loan deal, Rashford has emerged as one of the Blaugrana’s most important players this season.
His stunning strike over the weekend in Barcelona’s 3-1 victory over Elche has taken Rashford’s tally for the club to six goals across all competitions. He has also provided as many assists in that period.
Barcelona’s win against Elche lifted them to second place in the table on 25 points, five adrift of leaders and bitter rivals Real Madrid.
Despite Rashford showing no signs of slowing down, Flick has challenged the Carrington academy graduate to sharpen up in front of goal in order to become truly unstoppable.
Flick said [as quoted by FlashScore], “When you see the chances he has, I think one or two goals more will be good, also for him.”
“I know that he can play on this level and I am happy he shows it, for the fans and for the club, and also for the teammates he is a very important player.”
Rashford also admitted that he can refine his decision-making.
The England international remarked, “I just try to do the right things on the pitch. Even today, I could have had more assists or goals, sometimes the decision to shoot or pass was wrong. But I am going to have days like this. The important thing is always the team and today we won.”
“My focus is not so much on the output. If I am doing the right things, I know I will always be able to score and assist; my focus is with the team, to build relationships and feel comfortable.”
Barcelona goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny lauded Rashford, insisting that the forward ought to have more goals to his name considering his incredible abilities.
Szczesny told Barca’s YouTube channel [via Metro], “Marcus is an excellent player, I love him a lot. Direct in his play, attacks with speed, and he’s contributed to a lot of goals.”
“I think he’s a complete player, and I remember him since he was 18 or 19 in the Premier League. I knew he was special back then.”
“He has fewer goals than he deserves, because in training, when he’s having a good day, you can’t stop him. If he shows that magical right foot more in matches, he’ll be very dangerous.”
Rashford and Barcelona are next in action on Wednesday when they face Club Brugge in the Champions League.
