FC Barcelona remain focused on delivering results on the pitch and maximising the quality already available in the squad. While Joao Cancelo has arrived to strengthen the team this January and is expected to be the only winter addition the club makes, the situation regarding departures is developing more quickly.
One exit already on the horizon is that of Dro Fernandez, who is expected to leave the club permanently. In addition, the future of German goalkeeper and club captain Marc-Andre ter Stegen is now close to being resolved.
According to Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, FC Barcelona and Girona FC have reached a verbal agreement to send Ter Stegen to the Catalan neighbours on loan.
The goalkeeper gave his approval to the move last week, and both clubs have now agreed in principle on a loan deal that would run until the end of the season. Formal steps are expected to be completed in the coming days.
The move appears beneficial for all parties involved. With Joan Garcia firmly established as the first-choice goalkeeper, Ter Stegen has seen his playing time diminished. A temporary switch to Girona would allow the experienced shot stopper to regain regular minutes at a crucial stage of his career.
With the 2026 FIFA World Cup on the horizon, Ter Stegen is eager to remain competitive and visible at the highest level. A loan move within La Liga offers him that opportunity while also helping Barcelona manage their squad more effectively for the remainder of the campaign.
