Barcelona defender Joao Cancelo has opened the door to a return to Benfica this summer, amid uncertainty over his future. The veteran full-back has also voiced a desire to remain at Camp Nou, and it seems the Catalan giants are also keen on signing him at the end of his loan deal.
The 31-year-old returned in January for a second loan spell at Barcelona, this time from Saudi Arabian side Al-Hilal, and has performed above expectations. With one year remaining on his contract at Al-Hilal, Cancelo has been up front about his desire to continue at Barcelona, but the Blaugrana will only sanction a deal if he arrives on a free. Al-Hilal, for their part, are set to demand €15m for his signature.
This week the former Manchester City man was on Portugal duty, and speaking to Canal 11 (via MD), Cancelo confirmed he would be keen on a return to Benfica at some point.
“I’ve already earned more than I expected, but playing for Benfica is like playing basketball, it’s for the love of it. I’m going to take a pay cut.”
Despite their intentions with Cancelo, Barcelona are making plans in case they cannot pull the deal off. The Portuguese international seems willing to reduce his salary, but it appears that they are not willing to pay for the ageing defender. Bayer Leverkusen left-back and Juventus’ Andrea Cambiaso have been cited as two potential alternatives in case that comes to pass.
After a slow start, Cancelo has performed largely well, playing 18 times, scoring twice and giving six assists. Although doubts about his defensive acumen persist, there is little doubt he has outperformed Alejandro Balde over the past month of action. Balde is set to return from injury after the international break, which should give some clue as to Hansi Flick’s preference.
