Earlier in the summer, one of Hansi Flick’s main goals for the season ahead was to concede fewer goals than last season and improve the overall defensive record.
However, Barcelona were then dealt a massive blow as Inigo Martinez moved to Saudi Arabia, leaving a massive hole in the backline.
While Ronald Araujo is there to fill up, the new-look Barcelona defence has encountered many problems trying to cope without the services of Inigo.
As reported by Diario AS, Barcelona are already struggling without the presence of their veteran centre-back.
In their first two competitive matches this season, the Catalans have conceded two goals, including six clear chances against newly-promoted Levante, whose coach admitted that they were able to hurt Barça.
The absence of Inigo’s leadership is evident. He was Flick’s most trusted defender last season, the one who organised the backline, coordinated the offside traps, and provided calmness on the ball.

The veteran’s long left-footed passes to Lamine Yamal were often the launchpad for Barça’s attacks.
Flick himself admitted: “I love Ini. Last season, he was one of the main reasons for our success. He played all the time and gave his all for this club.”
Youngster Pau Cubarsi, who flourished alongside Inigo last term, has found it harder without his senior partner.
Against Levante, he lost key duels and was caught out for the first goal. Araujo has been solid, but he is more reactive than proactive, meaning he still needs time to adapt to Flick’s high-line system.
Alejandro Balde, too, misses Inigo’s constant instructions to maintain the defensive line. Without him, positional lapses have already crept in.
All of this has led to a bit of instability in the Barcelona defence and must be resolved soon, especially once the club start to face stronger teams in the league.
