FC Barcelona want to keep Ferran Torres, but the club are not expected to move forward with a renewal until after the summer transfer window closes.
The reason is financial rather than sporting. Barca are currently prioritising registrations and transfer business, meaning Ferran’s new contract has effectively been pushed down the list for now.
According to AS, Barcelona would owe Manchester City €7 million if the Spanish forward extends his current deal.
That clause has made the timing of any renewal especially important at a moment when every part of the club’s Fair Play margin matters.
The club’s priority is to first complete its squad planning and register new signings, including Anthony Gordon, Karim Adeyemi and the expected arrival of a new centre-forward.
Only once those operations are safely completed does Barcelona intend to return to Ferran’s contract situation.
The current plan is therefore to wait until September, when the market is closed and the club has a clearer picture of its salary situation.
That approach is understandable from a financial point of view, but it also carries risk.
Ferran has interest from Paris Saint-Germain and is open to the possibility of joining the French champions.
PSG have not yet formally contacted Barcelona, but their interest remains firm, and the delay over a renewal could strengthen the player’s doubts about his long-term role at Camp Nou.
From Barca’s perspective, this is a delicate balance. The club value Ferran and want him to stay, but they also cannot afford to compromise key registrations for the sake of accelerating one renewal.
At the same time, asking a productive player to wait while the club signs another striker may not exactly feel like a major show of faith.
Barcelona are trying to manage the numbers carefully. The danger is that, while they wait for the right financial moment, Ferran may decide his sporting future lies somewhere else.
It remains to be seen how Deco handles this delicate situation and what solution he arrives at.
