Barcelona director Deco a big admirer of 30-year-old La Liga goalkeeper – report | OneFootball

The goalkeeping department at FC Barcelona for next season looks already set as Marc-Andre ter Stegen, soon set to return from injury, will be the first-choice while Wojciech Szczesny, expected to renew his contract, will be his backup.

As for Inaki Pena, having fallen down the pecking order this season, looks destined for a summer departure, with several La Liga clubs showing an interest.

However, Barça director Deco is already thinking about the future of the goalkeeping department beyond Ter Stegen and Szczesny, both of whom are in their thirties.

Deco likes Alex Remiro

As such, Catalunya Radio reports that Deco is a big admirer of Real Sociedad and Spain goalkeeper Alex Remiro.

The 30-year-old custodian has been with Sociedad since 2019, having arrived from fellow Basque side Athletic Club and has become one of the most reliable players in his position in La Liga.

The goalkeeper has featured 42 times for Imanol Alguacil’s side this term in all competitions, managing 15 clean sheets

Remiro, whose contract at Sociedad runs until the summer of 2027, has also made a couple of appearances for the Spanish national team.

As mentioned earlier, Ter Stegen, whose contract runs out in 2028, will be Barça’s first choice next season, although a lot will depend on the form he shows following a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

Szczesny has done a sterling job in the German’s absence this season, but is only likely to continue for one more year.

So, it makes sense for Deco to start planning for the future, especially with Pena expected to leave.

There had been rumours of interest in RCD Espanyol’s Joan Garcia but it appears that Remiro, too, is high on Deco’s list of potential targets.

Any move for a new goalkeeper, however, is unlikely to take place this summer and will mostly be planned for 2026.
