Several FC Barcelona players recently took part in the game between Spain and Uruguay in Group H of the FIFA World Cup. A highly anticipated encounter, it was a must-win for both teams to achieve their respective goals of qualifying to the next round.

Ultimately, Spain managed to come away with a victory but it was hardly a straightforward win for them. The 1-0 win was truly something that Spain had to fight for until the end, and two Barcelona players in particular even managed to escape getting seriously injured.

That is because, as highlighted by Mundo Deportivo, Uruguay were rather determined to play a physical game that tested the limits of what the referee would penalize. However, the man spearheading those attempts was Fluminense player Agustin Canobbio, and he was determined to leave someone sidelined.

From early on in the game, the Uruguayan player kept endangering the Spanish players with some reckless challenges that surprisingly went unpunished for much of the game. One of his earliest tackles came on Pedri, where he brought down his foot on the Barcelona star’s foot and left him on the floor with play needing to be stopped momentarily as well.

Somehow, he managed to escape that encounter with nothing more than a soft warning. Considering that the challenge could easily have been brought under question for potentially a red card as well, the fact that he did not even receive a yellow card for it was genuinely surprising.

However, the other Barça player that had the misfortune of having to contest a duel against him was Pau Cubarsi. The 19-year-old centre-back was met with the underside of the boot of a sliding Canobbio, and this particularly brutal challenge fortunately did not go unpunished.

With the referee immediately taking out the red card, the Uruguayan player was dismissed. However, instead of being apologetic about his challenge or his behaviour throughout the game, he began to aggressively argue with the referee in an attempt to get him to change his decision.
