According to L'Équipe, a Barcelona supporter aiming to attend Tuesday’s Champions League last-16 first leg at Newcastle accidentally travelled to St. James Park in Exeter, roughly 600 km away, and ended up watching a third-tier fixture instead.
The tie finished 1-1, while the fan had arrived at the ground in the south-west of England, far from the European spotlight.
A club volunteer alerted staff that a man had turned up expecting to see Barcelona. Staff found his English hesitant, believed he had come from London, and concluded he had followed directions after entering only St. James Park into his phone.
To soften the blow, the volunteers let him in for free to Exeter City’s home match against Lincoln in the third tier. The visitors won 1-0.
He was very disappointed, but staff found him a ticket and he watched the game at Exeter’s St. James Park. He was told he would be welcome to return any time.
