The powers that be at La Liga giants Barcelona have altered the club’s transfer strategy for the summer.

That’s according to Diario Sport, who have this week provided an insight into the situation.

For some time now, widespread sources in the media have been in agreement when it comes to Barcelona’s priority area of reinforcement with a view to next season.

The position in question? The base of the club’s midfield.

With Oriol Romeu having failed to live up to expectations in the aftermath of Sergio Busquets’ departure last summer, the Blaugrana have long set about securing a worthy successor in the ‘pivot’ berth.

To date, a whole host of options from across Spain and Europe alike have been tipped as potential arrivals, with the widespread expectation being that, before the market is out, Deco and co. will have locked down a high-profile midfield signing.

And yet, if the latest word to have come to the fore late tonight is anything to go by, it would appear that securing such a player is in fact no longer the leading priority of the Camp Nou brass.

Instead, as per Sport:

‘Barça are now very clear that Nico Williams is the man. Joan Laporta has no doubts and has set his arrival as a priority objective. Even more than a pivot for the centre of the field.’

Barcelona’s team of directors, as a result, have long begun working behind the scenes to piece together the required €58 million sum to trigger wide-man Nico’s Athletic Club release clause.
