FC Barcelona are on somewhat of a spree this month when it comes to youth signings.
Having announced the capture of Juwensley Onstein earlier today, the Blaugrana are also set to add Hamza Abdelkarim and Patricio Pacifico to their squad imminently. A deal for Ruud Nijstad also remains in the works.
Now, according to journalist Gianluigi Longari, Barcelona have ‘essentially closed’ the deal to sign teenage winger Ajay Tavares from Norwich City.
One of the most sought-after talents in England, the 16-year-old Tavares’ arrival at the Blaugrana club is now only a matter of time, with just his signature on the contract pending.
Despite being from the United Kingdom, the player holds a European passport, which allows him to be transferred immediately, having turned 16 years old in December.
Tavares is a talented young forward, capable of playing across the frontline. Despite having turned 16 only last month, he has been playing for Norwich City’s Under-18 team in the current campaign.
So far, he has made 19 appearances for the team, scoring one goal in the process.
Meanwhile, Tavares has represented the England national team at the Under-15 and Under-16 levels, and is currently a part of the Under-17 setup, for whom he has made four appearances.
It remains to be seen which squad he joins upon signing for Barcelona – whether he is brought into the reserve team setup or links up with one of the youth sides.
But, as things stand, Tavares’ signing is pretty much a done deal, with only his signing on the contract remaining pending.
