Barcelona have two major items on the agenda of Director of Football Deco to resolve before January. In three months’ time, Frenkie de Jong and Eric Garcia will be able to sign contracts with any other club and leave on a free.
Manager Hansi Flick, who asked Barcelona to hold onto to both de Jong and Garcia over the past year, is believed to be keen to hang onto both players. Deco plans to resolve de Jong’s deal before Garcia’s, but de Jong has already publicly declared his intention to renew his deal.
According to MD, after further discussions with de Jong and new agent Sebastien Ladure, an agreement is closer to being done. Barcelona intend to offer de Jong a three-year deal, and it will include a wage cut for the Dutchman. The numbers have been discussed with de Jong though, and he is comfortable with the figures involved, as he is keen to continue in the Catalan capital.

The remaining matters to be discussed are some of the variables. De Jong will continue to earn what he was due, including his deferred wages, for the rest of this year, and the new salary would come into play next season, something for Barcelona to consider for their salary limit too.
With Marc-Andre ter Stegen out injured long-term, de Jong is for the most part the one wearing the captain’s armband, as the most tenured member of the first team with the exception of the German. Since January, ter Stegen’s compatriot Flick has made a point of establishing de Jong as a starter at the base of midfield alongside Pedri. This season de Jong has played all but 30 minutes of the games he has been fit for, coming off with Barcelona two goals up against Getafe.
