As Barcelona get ready for the 2025/26 season, one player who deserves our full attention is Gavi. The 20-year-old midfielder has always been seen as a vital part of the team, but right now, he does not seem to fit into Hansi Flick’s starting plans.

It is not about his ability, as Gavi has plenty of that, but the current squad is packed with midfield options, making it hard for him to find regular space.

Gavi did manage to meet a big goal last season. After nearly a year out with a serious injury, he returned to action in October. He showed some signs of improvement in January, but another injury, a knock to the head in February, slowed him down again.

Still, in the final weeks of the season, Gavi found his rhythm. Flick was impressed with his performances and started to see Gavi as someone who could operate across more than just one position.

Determined to make his mark

Gavi has been working hard all summer. He knows he is not part of the starting XI yet, and that has made him even more driven.

He is focused on getting to peak fitness before the first La Liga game against Mallorca, as last season was all about returning from injury and adapting.

He accepted a lesser role and even built a good relationship with Flick. But this time around, he is aiming higher.

The World Cup season

He is not the kind of player to accept being on the bench behind Frenkie de Jong, Pedri, or Dani Olmo. Gavi wants to prove that he deserves to play.

This season is also key for his national team hopes, with the World Cup on the horizon. Spain manager Luis de la Fuente still counts on him, but competition is tough, especially with players like Isco, Mikel Merino, Fabian Ruiz, and Alex Baena in the mix.

Gavi knows he must stay consistent and show quality right from the pre-season tour if he wants to stay in the spotlight. If not, Barcelona might consider a summer sale after the 2025/26 season.
