Barcelona have received mixed news on Pedri after the midfielder underwent medical tests following his early exit from the 4-2 victory against Slavia Prague.
The club confirmed that the 23-year-old midfielder has suffered a muscle injury to his right biceps femoris, ruling him out for around a month.
Pedri went down injured at a time when both sides were tied 2-2, courtesy of an eight-minute brace from Fermin Lopez.
Barcelona were trailing just 10 minutes into the game, with Pedri setting up Lopez’s second before Robert Lewandowski’s own goal levelled matters.
The Polish striker made up for his error in the 70th minute after Dani Olmo had given Barcelona the lead for the first time in the game with a spectacular strike.
Pedri’s injury is a massive blow for Hansi Flick and the club, but the situation could have been far worse.
The Spanish playmaker limped off the pitch looking downcast, which sparked initial fears of a serious tear that would have kept him out for much longer than four weeks.
However, medical examinations confirmed that Barcelona had avoided the worst-case scenario. So instead of a six-to-eight-week lay-off, Pedri is expected to return to action in roughly four weeks.
Pedri is the latest Barcelona star to be sidelined after Ferran Torres, although the Spanish forward isn’t facing an extended spell in the infirmary.
Barcelona have confirmed that Pedri will miss games against Real Oviedo, FC Copenhagen, Elche, Albacete Balompie, RCD Mallorca, Girona, and Levante.
Barcelona are still pushing to finish in the Champions League top eight to secure automatic qualification to the knockout stage, which would allow them to skip the play-off round.
If they fail to do so, Pedri would miss the first leg of that tie in mid-February. Similarly, should Barcelona reach the Copa del Rey semi-finals, Pedri would also be absent for the first leg.
Pedri is estimated to miss between six and eight matches, which could have a significant bearing on Barcelona’s ambitions.
The Blaugranas are just one point ahead of fierce rivals Real Madrid in the La Liga title race. They must now find a way to push forward without one of their best players.
