FC Barcelona will have a major decision to make next summer with regard to the direction they intend to take with the centre-forward position.

Robert Lewandowski will turn 37 on 21 August and is in the final year of his contract, leading to assumptions that this may very well be his final season at the Catalan club.

There has already been talk about a potential big-money move for a marquee striker – names like Julian Alvarez and Alexander Isak have been doing the rounds.

Lewandowski could stay for another season

However, according to SPORT, the Barcelona sporting management does not wish to rush for a big signing for the role. That approach is partly due to the club’s delicate financial position, although if they return to the 1:1 spending rule.

For now, despite his age, Barça consider that Lewandowski’s weight in the dressing room and his goal-scoring ability when fully fit remain intact, as was seen until he suffered injury late last season.

As such, according to the report, extending his deal for one more year, until 2027, is not ruled out. Barcelona insist that each season presents new scenarios, and the priority is to monitor his progress this campaign before making a decision.

Lewandowski, for his part, has always maintained that he feels at his best physically and has never hidden his desire to continue at Barcelona for as long as possible.

However, it remains to be seen whether this is the route that the Blaugrana decide to take come summer of 2026.

Ferran Torres continues to stake a claim

Saturday’s match against Mallorca provided clues for the present and the future. Without Lewandowski, Ferran Torres was the natural choice to lead the attack, and he delivered a solid display, capped with a true striker’s goal.

In his 69 minutes, the Spaniard provided good movement, attacked the spaces, and built a strong connection with Lamine Yamal.

Last season’s numbers, coupled with his performance against Mallorca, support Barcelona’s intention to see Ferran in more starting roles without Lewandowski and to test him further in the No. 9 position.

If he continues in the same vein of form, Barcelona might not rush into the market for a new centre-forward next year and opt to put their trust in Ferran and renew Lewandowski, while not forgetting that Dani Olmo can also be an option as a false-nine.

At the same time, someone like Marcus Rashford, who can be signed permanently for €30 million, could represent a low-cost bet from the sporting department.

For now, Barcelona want to delay the decision, but sooner rather than later, the ‘striker file’ will need to be reopened.
