FC Barcelona have been enduring a very good campaign under Hansi Flick, and the German coach has transformed the fortunes of the Catalan club. The team is on course to compete for trophies on multiple fronts after what feels like ages.
Often, the transfer window that comes immediately after a season like this is quite pivotal in shaping the future of a club, as Barcelona will need to be smart and make shrewd acquisitions to ensure that the team does not become a one-season wonder.
One player that Barcelona have been interested in for quite some time now, despite it being quite unrealistic, is Newcastle United centre-forward Alexander Isak. The 25-year-old Swede has been the best number nine in the Premier League this season and has received interest from multiple clubs.
Now, as per Sky Switzerland (h/t Mundo Deportivo), Liverpool have already initiated talks with Isak’s representatives and are willing to pay a significant amount way beyond their usual limits to try and sign the player.
The report mentions that should Liverpool make an offer close to Newcastle United’s asking price of €180m, Barcelona certainly won’t match or enter the race for the player and understandably so, considering their financial situation.
Despite seemingly being out of the choppy waters in terms of their financial issues, Barcelona are nowhere close to having the kind of spending power that they once did and cannot make such huge signings.
Although there isn’t a striker in the world who would be better suited to Barcelona under Hansi Flick than Isak, the Catalan club needs to be prudent in their potential signings, not just in the upcoming summer but for the next few years.
It remains to be seen who Barcelona decides to go for if Alexander Isak lies outside their budget. Signing a striker might be imperative come the summer and let’s wait and see how it ends up playing out in the coming months.
