FC Barcelona received a cruel blow at the beginning of January when it emerged that talented La Masia starlet Dro Fernandez would not sign a new contract with the club and had agreed to move to French giants PSG.

Hansi Flick had placed immense trust in the 18-year-old from the start of pre-season, making him a mainstay in the first-team set-up and even giving him the chance to start when Fermin and Dani Olmo were injured.

It is a shame that the player has decided not to repay the German manager for his faith and has instead chosen to move to PSG. It emerged yesterday that the French club negotiated a fee higher than his release clause with Barcelona to maintain the good relationship between the Catalan club.

After the game against Real Oviedo, which Barcelona won 3–0, president Joan Laporta expressed his displeasure with the player’s decision. As quoted by SPORT, he said:

“We will speak when everything is finalized. It has been an unpleasant situation. We could have resolved it as planned, but it was a surprise because we had agreed on a new solution with Dro once he turned 18, and, unexpectedly, his agent told us he wouldn’t be able to fulfill the agreement.”

Laporta’s words reveal a new angle to this saga. It was initially assumed that Dro had not agreed to a contract extension, but it now appears that he agreed to extend his deal only to backtrack at the last moment.

It is still not clear why Dro has been advised to move to PSG, especially when Barcelona have a manager who has a lot of trust in him. It could be sporting, it could be economic, but, irrespective of the reason, the player is leaving, and it remains to be seen how his career pans out in France.
