As we approach the final few matches of the season, the Barcelona management is gearing up for a busy period ahead.

The club will not only make plans for the upcoming summer transfer window but also secure the future of some of the first-team stars, whose contracts are expiring in the near future.

One of them is Frenkie de Jong, who has been one of the standout players for Barcelona this season.

Once regarded as a liability, de Jong has become a real leader in the middle of the park for Barcelona and an indispensable figure in Hansi Flick’s setup.

Keeping that in mind, the Barcelona management could soon double down on their attempts to secure the future of de Jong.

Laporta gives a thumbs-up

According to AS, Barcelona president Joan Laporta has given his approval for the club to push ahead with Frenkie de Jong’s contract renewal.

That is because the Dutch midfielder is seen as a pillar for the club’s future, especially as the player starts to attract the interest of multiple clubs across Europe.

Laporta’s position marks a shift in tone from the uncertainty of three years ago, when the club were actively trying to sell De Jong.

The memory of that 2022 summer, when he was almost pushed out of the club, still lingers for the player. However, the current leadership is now fully backing his continuity.

De Jong, for his part, appears more open than ever to renewing. He reportedly told his close circle back in December that he intended to stay.

The one sticking point remains his salary. The club would ideally expect him to accept a reduction from the inflated contract signed during the Josep Bartomeu era.

But with both sides now aligned in their intention, the coming weeks could bring some good news as far as de Jong’s renewal is concerned.
