Joan Laporta arrived at Barcelona to submit his signatures ahead of the club’s presidential elections scheduled for 15 March.

Laporta makes symbolic arrival

Former Barcelona president Joan Laporta arrived at Barcelona headquarters on a truck carrying his campaign slogan:

“Defend Barcelona”

As the race for the club’s presidency entered a key stage.

According to Catalan newspaper Mundo Deportivo, Laporta submitted 8,171 signature, fewer than the 10,257 he collected during his successful 2021 campaign.

Despite the drop, the number was more than enough to confirm his candidacy.

Other candidates reach the threshold

Laporta is not alone in the race. His main rival Victor Font submitted 5,140 signature while Marc Ciria presented 2,840.

The minimum number of signatures required to become an official candidate is 2,337 meaning all three are now formally in the running ahead of the vote on Sunday 15 March.

“This is not a loss of trust”

Laporta thanked club members for their support and praised his campaign team. He insisted that the lower number of signatures compared to 2021 does not reflect a loss of confidence.

He explained that the situation is different this time saying there is general feeling of trust among members as if many believe his victory is already secure.

Laporta added that he hopes more members will turn out to vote on election day.
