FC Barcelona were quite close to making it to the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League for the second consecutive season, but were kept from doing so by Atletico Madrid.
Still, the Catalans deserve a lot of credit for competing with the very top teams in Europe, despite them facing a very difficult financial situation for quite some time now.
In fact, Mundo Deportivo cites a report from Transfermarkt to note that up to 97 teams across Europe spent more than Barcelona during the last summer and winter transfer windows.
The Blaugranes spent only €25 million, and another €1.34 million to adjust for inflation, for Joan Garcia’s signing from Espanyol, and another €2.5 million for Roony Bardghji’s signing from Copenhagen, thus taking their total expenses to €28.84 million.
This ranks them 98th in the list of clubs to have spent the most to strengthen their squads in the last two windows (summer 2025 and winter 2026), significantly below other top teams in the UCL. 10 of the top 11 teams in this list were from England, while Atletico Madrid, who eliminated Barcelona, were ranked 9th, having spent €229.95 million.
This ranking is only another indication of the good work done by Barcelona to continue competing with the very best sides in Europe despite their financial troubles.
