Barcelona could finally be closing in on securing Joao Cancelo’s long-term future, with fresh developments in Saudi Arabia seemingly removing one of the biggest obstacles standing in the way of a permanent deal.
According to SPORT, Al Hilal’s decision to continue with Simone Inzaghi has significantly improved Barcelona’s chances of keeping the Portuguese defender.
The Saudi giants are already planning reinforcements in the full-back department, a move that could pave the way for Cancelo’s departure.
It must be remembered that Cancelo is an important piece of Hansi Flick’s plans, and there is growing optimism that a permanent agreement can now be reached.

However, Inzaghi’s continuity has now clarified the club’s transfer strategy and could ultimately benefit Barcelona.
Cancelo’s relationship with the Italian coach reportedly deteriorated during their time together, with the Portuguese international gradually falling down the pecking order.
That situation forced the experienced defender to actively seek an exit during the winter transfer window, eventually opening the door to a move to Barcelona.
Since arriving at the club, Cancelo has regained confidence and rediscovered his best form.
His performances have convinced Flick, who is understood to be fully supportive of keeping the player at the club for the foreseeable future.

One of the remaining hurdles for Barcelona involved Cancelo’s contractual situation in Saudi Arabia.
The Portuguese defender still has one year left on his agreement with Al Hilal, meaning negotiations are required to find a solution that would allow him to leave permanently.
Now, that process appears much simpler because Inzaghi has requested the signing of a new right-back as well as a central defender for next season.
Those demands effectively eliminate any possibility of Cancelo being reintegrated into the squad.
Barcelona are therefore hopeful that Al Hilal will authorise the termination of Cancelo’s contract, although a small compensation package or a deal involving a young player could still be discussed between the clubs.
