It has been some days since the Atletico Madrid forward Julian Alvarez publicly declared his desire to leave the Catalan club, but it still remains to be seen how FC Barcelona will go forward to sign their top-priority target.

Although there have been no official movements by the Catalan club since the Argentine’s comments, this story has remained at the forefront of media, and speculation is rife about what next steps the involved parties can take.

As far as Barcelona are concerned, a report from Mundo Deportivo has outlined their current situation regarding this operation. The report claims that the Blaugranes remain fully committed to Alvarez, as they believe that they cannot abandon him after he has publicly asked for a move, and thus, would give their everything to ensure this transfer materializes.

Despite the passing time, the Catalans remain calm and firm about their position, and are not looking to rush things. This is mainly because they do not want the player’s – who remains a key part of the Argentine national team – World Cup 2026 campaign to be disrupted, especially as his team is one of the top contenders for the title.

Meanwhile, Barcelona are also encouraged by their belief that some voices from within Atletico are also in favor of the spider departing their club, even though the Madrid club is currently trying to delay the operation.

One problem in this entire saga is the breakdown of communications between the two Spanish clubs. Joan Laporta maintains a good relationship with Enrique Cerezo, but the latter has only a symbolic role at his club. Thus, it would be Deco and Mateu Alemany who would fight it out for the operation, but the latter does not have a good relationship either with Deco or with Laporta. The Colchoneros have also already denounced Alvarez’s agent for his efforts to get the player away from their team.

Meanwhile, Barcelona are also unable to find any players from their own team who could become part of a swap deal. Ferran Torres could have interested Atletico Madrid, but he is not interested in a move, while the Mattress Makers are not interested in Marc Casado, who might have been open for a move to Madrid. Thus, it looks unlikely that the Catalans would make a firm move for Julian Alvarez before the end of the World Cup.
