Barcelona have officially entered the race to sign Espanyol goalkeeper Joan Garcia, viewing the 24-year-old as a golden market opportunity following his confirmed departure from their city rivals, according to a report from Mundo Deportivo.
With a €25 million release clause and mounting interest across Europe, the Blaugrana are looking to move quickly before the window of opportunity closes.
Sporting director Deco and head coach Hansi Flick are aligned in their belief that Garcia is an ideal fit for Barça’s evolving squad.
His performances throughout the season have earned widespread praise, with his reliability and composure under pressure playing a crucial role in Espanyol’s dramatic survival in La Liga.
Despite chants of “Joan stay!” ringing around the RCDE Stadium during the final match, the goalkeeper has made it clear that he is ready to take the next step in his career. “Whatever happens, I’m leaving,” he has confirmed.
Barcelona’s goalkeeping department currently faces an uncertain summer. Marc-Andre ter Stegen is entering his 12th season with the club, while Wojciech Szczesny is undecided about extending his stay beyond his current deal.

Against this backdrop, Garcia’s situation is incredibly appealing. He has top-flight experience, is still very young, and his €25 million buyout clause is considered good value given the inflated nature of the goalkeeping market.
Additionally, Barcelona have a close relationship with Garcia’s agents — the same representatives who handle Dani Olmo — which could ease negotiations and help secure a quick agreement.
Interestingly, Barcelona are not alone in their pursuit. Garcia has attracted strong interest from the Premier League, with Arsenal, Aston Villa, and Bournemouth all showing varying degrees of intent.
Arsenal already boast David Raya but may look to the future, while Aston Villa want to reinforce their squad with two keepers. Elsewhere, Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen and Serie A title-holders Napoli have also made concrete approaches.
Barcelona had deliberately held off making a formal move while Espanyol’s league status remained unresolved, but with survival secured and Garcia’s departure now confirmed, the Blaugrana are preparing to act swiftly.
Once their interest is formalised, the decision will largely rest with the player, who must weigh his options carefully.
