Ronald Araujo appeared to have one foot out of Barcelona less than 48 hours ago as the player was insistent on leaving the club for greener pastures.

While indeed always an advocate of staying in Catalonia, the Uruguayan was worried about the lack of prominence he may face under Hansi Flick, especially given Pau Cubarsi and Inigo Martinez’s stunning form and thus tried to force an exit.

Eventually, the player changed his mind and decided to stay at Barcelona at least until the end of the season after talking with sporting director Deco who explained to him that he is highly valued in the team and that leaving in January would not do any party good.

Meeting planned

While Araujo will now stay at Barcelona until the end of the season, the club hope to tie him down for the long term by offering him a renewal for five years.

Concurrently, however, they wish to accommodate the player’s desire to have a lower release clause so as to retain the option of leaving should his prominence reduce.

As relayed by Mundo Deportivo in a recent update, Barcelona have planned a meeting with Araujo’s agents in the coming days to discuss his future and contract renewal.

On the day, the parties will not only discuss the financial terms of his new deal but also negotiate a release clause that works for both parties should the player opt to leave in the near future.

With relations between Barcelona and Araujo having significantly improved in recent days and the player set to receive more prominence on the field, the situation appears to be solved for now.

Considering Inigo Martinez’s age, moreover, it is clear as daylight that the club see Araujo as Cubarsi’s long-term defensive partner and that a lack of playing time will likely never emerge as a hurdle.
