“If I’d felt pressure, I would have brought him in. Surely Joan’s moment will come, as it will for other teammates,” Spain manager Luis de la Fuente said in a recent press conference when asked about calling up Barcelona’s goalkeeper Joan Garcia.

The manager’s response did not commit to him counting on the player in the future, nor did it rule out the possibility, and made it clear that the manager just requires a larger sample space to take note of the player’s brilliance.

So far, the goalkeeper has been spectacular for Barcelona since signing in the summer. If his form is anything to go by, it may well be just a matter of time before he joins La Roja even as a starter.

Valencia legend backs Garcia

Speaking to the media in a recent interview, former Valencia goalkeeper Jaume Domenech shared his thoughts on Joan Garcia’s talent, his ability to break into the national team and the competition he faces.

He began by praising the three goalkeepers currently trusted by Luis de la Fuente and how it is understandable that Garcia has not been called up yet.

“The three goalkeepers (Unai Simón, David Raya and Álex Remiro) have worked well for the national team, and the coach does not see the need for a change right now,” he said.

He then admitted that the Barcelona player was in a league of his own and that he will, with time, get opportunities aplenty to establish himself as a mainstay.

“But Joan had a stratospheric season and I think he is a goalkeeper who will end up in the national team, but we must not rush him.”

Speaking on the current competition for the spot of the number 1 national team goalkeeper in Spain and how it was highly contested at this point in time, the former player said,

“There may be a natural change of cycle as has happened other times, but the current goalkeepers are performing very well.”

“Unai is perhaps less spectacular than others, but there are few goalkeepers as complete as him,” he added.
